Hampden County Overview
Hampden County Sheriff's Office and Inmate Population
The Hampden County Sheriff's Office runs the jail and house of correction at 627 Randall Road in Ludlow. Sheriff Nick Cocchi leads the department. The facility holds people who are awaiting trial and those who have been sentenced to terms of two and a half years or less. State law under M.G.L. c. 66, § 10 gives the public the right to ask for records from government offices, and that includes basic inmate data held by the sheriff.
The sheriff's office also runs the Western Massachusetts Regional Women's Correctional Center. This is one of the few county-level women's facilities in the state. Both the men's and women's sites fall under the same administration. So when you call about an inmate, the staff can check both locations.
The Hampden County Sheriff's Office homepage lists programs, news, and contact info for the facility.
The Hampden County Sheriff's Office site shows details on its jail programs and services.
This site does not have a live inmate search tool, but it does list phone numbers and other ways to get info.

How to Search the Hampden County Inmate Population
Since Hampden County does not post its inmate population list online, you have to use other methods. The fastest way is to call the jail at (413) 858-0000. This line is staffed around the clock, so you can call at any time of day or night. Give the staff member the full name and date of birth of the person you are looking for, and they can tell you if that person is in custody.
VINELink is a free tool that tracks inmates across Massachusetts. You can use it to search by name. It covers county jails and state prisons. If someone is booked into the Hampden County facility, VINELink should show it. You can also sign up for alerts. The system will call, text, or email you when an inmate's status changes. Visit vinelink.com to run a search.
Court records are another route. The MassCourts system lets you look up cases by name. If someone has been arraigned in Hampden County, the case will show up there. It won't always say where the person is being held, but it confirms that charges exist and a case is open.
You can also go in person. The jail is on Randall Road in Ludlow. Bring your ID. Staff at the front desk can tell you if someone is held there. This is not the same as visiting an inmate. To visit, you need to schedule ahead of time.
Hampden County Inmate Population Records Requests
Massachusetts public records law gives people the right to ask for government documents. Under M.G.L. c. 66, § 10, any person can submit a written request for records. The Records Access Officer (RAO) for the Hampden County Sheriff's Office is Theresa S. Finnegan, who serves as Assistant Superintendent and General Counsel.
Phone calls and voicemails are not accepted for records requests. All requests must be in writing. You can send your request by mail to the jail address or by fax to (413) 589-1851. Reach the RAO directly at (413) 858-0164, Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 3 PM, but only to ask questions about the process. The actual request has to be on paper.
The first four hours of work on any records request are free. After that, the office charges $25 per hour. Copies cost five cents per page. These fees come from the state fee schedule set by M.G.L. c. 4, § 7 and related regulations. The Massachusetts Secretary of State's public records page has more details on your rights and how to file a request if you run into problems.
Robert Rizzuto is the Public Information Officer. His direct line is (413) 858-0022. He handles media questions and general public inquiries that fall outside the formal records request process.

The Massachusetts Department of Correction runs state prisons. If someone gets sentenced to more than two and a half years, they go to a state facility, not the county jail. The DOC has its own inmate lookup tool. Visit mass.gov's inmate search page to check state prisons. County jails like Hampden County are separate from this system.
Under M.G.L. c. 276, § 100A, certain criminal records can be sealed after a set period. This applies to court records, not jail booking data. But it means that older cases may not show up in a search even if the person was once held at the Hampden County Jail.
The Massachusetts Sheriffs' Association lists all 14 county sheriff's offices in the state. Each one runs its own jail. Policies on inmate searches, visits, and records vary from county to county. Hampden County is one of the larger operations in western Massachusetts.
